Ceiling Lighting

Ceiling lighting can add focal point and impact to any space. Whether you want to create a grand entrance in a hotel, a dramatic feature over a dining table or stairwell, explore our range of ceiling lights.

The ceiling light is the fitting a room is judged by: the first thing you look up at, the source most rooms rely on. Getting it right, the right size, the right drop, the right character, changes how the whole room feels; getting it wrong leaves even a beautiful room oddly flat.

Our ceiling lighting is designed and handmade in our Herefordshire workshop, as we have done since 1982: pendants, chandeliers, lanterns, clusters and flush fittings in solid hand-spun brass and proper glass, from clean-lined pieces like the Ingham pendant to our Upton cluster chandeliers and linear pendants. Because every fitting is made to order, the drop and finish are set to your room, not a warehouse shelf.

The two measurements that matter: size and height. Add your room’s length and width in feet, that number in inches is a good fitting diameter, and keep 2.1 metres of clearance where people walk. Tell us your dimensions and we will recommend honestly, including when a flush fitting serves you better than the pendant you had your eye on.

What size ceiling light do I need?

As a guide, add the room’s length and width in feet, and that number in inches gives a good ceiling light diameter. Generous rooms forgive larger fittings; a light that is too small always looks lost. Tell us your room dimensions and ceiling height and we will recommend a size before we make it.

How low should a ceiling light hang?

Anywhere people walk beneath it, keep at least 2.1 metres from floor to the bottom of the fitting. Over tables, islands and beds the rules relax: 75 to 90 centimetres above the surface sits right. In stairwells a ceiling light can drop dramatically lower. Made-to-order means we set the drop for your room.

What ceiling light suits a low ceiling?

Low ceilings rule out pendants over floor space but not character: flush and semi-flush fittings, short lanterns and plafonniers give you warmth and interest without the headroom. Over a table or bed, a low-hung pendant still works even in a low room, because nobody walks there.

What is the difference between a pendant and a chandelier?

A pendant is a single light on one drop; a chandelier carries multiple lights, usually on arms or in a cluster, and makes the bigger statement. Pendants suit kitchens, tables and quieter rooms; chandeliers suit stairwells, dining rooms and anywhere you want the fitting to be the moment. We make both to order.

Can ceiling lights be dimmed?

Yes. All our ceiling lights take LED bulbs and dim normally with dimmable LEDs on a compatible dimmer, so the same room can run bright by day and warm and low by night. We recommend dimming almost everywhere, and we can suggest bulb and dimmer pairings for each fitting.

Can a ceiling light be made to fit my ceiling height?

Yes, that is the point of made-to-order. Every Fritz Fryer ceiling light is made in our Herefordshire workshop with the drop set to your ceiling, from a low cottage room to a double-height stairwell, and finishes matched to your scheme. Send us your ceiling height and we will do the rest.

Are ceiling lights enough on their own?

Rarely. One ceiling light alone leaves a room flat and shadowed; the comfortable rooms layer the ceiling fitting with wall lights and lamps at lower levels. That said, in hallways, landings and utility rooms a single well-chosen ceiling light is often honestly all you need.

How much do ceiling lights cost?

Our made-to-order ceiling lights are priced comparably with premium retail brands, with chandeliers rising with size and complexity. What the extra buys is solid materials, handmaking in Herefordshire, a drop set exactly to your room, and a fitting built to last decades rather than seasons.
