Retro Lights

If you love the styles of the past but appreciate the ease of modern light fittings, our fantastic collection of retro lights is the perfect place for you. From traditional wall lights to crystal chandeliers, find retro lighting perfect for your home or commercial space.

Retro lighting brings the character of another era, mid-century, Art Deco, the converted gas fittings of the Edwardian years, without the rewiring anxiety of buying old stock. The best of it mixes genuine restored originals with faithful new pieces made the way the originals were.

That mix is exactly what we do. Fritz Fryer has restored and made lighting in our Herefordshire workshop since 1982, so this collection runs from genuine one-offs, converted gasoliers, Art Nouveau gas rods like our two-branch example with opalescent shades, and a mid-20th century search lamp, to made-to-order retro pendant lights, retro wall lights and retro table lamps built the way the originals were.

Every piece, original or new, is rewired in line with current standards and safety-tested before it leaves the workshop. If you are hunting a particular era or style, tell us; one-offs come and go, and we will be straight about what is available and what can be made instead.

What is retro lighting?

Retro lighting is lighting with the character of a past era, mid-century, Art Deco, Edwardian, made or restored for modern homes. Some pieces are genuine originals restored and rewired; others are new fittings built the way the originals were. Fritz Fryer does both, in a workshop that has run since 1982.

Are your retro lights genuine originals or reproductions?

Both, and we are always clear which is which. Our retro collection mixes genuine restored originals, converted gas fittings, period shades and one-off finds, with made-to-order pieces built to period designs. Every original is rewired in line with current standards and safety-tested before it leaves the workshop.

Are restored vintage lights safe to use?

Yes, when properly restored. Every original piece we sell is stripped, rewired in line with current standards and safety-tested in our Herefordshire workshop before sale. That is the difference between buying a restored light from a specialist and buying untested old stock, which should always be rewired before use.

Does retro lighting work in a modern home?

Yes. Retro fittings give modern rooms warmth and a point of difference; a mid-century pendant or Art Deco wall light sits comfortably against clean contemporary interiors. The contrast is often the best thing about it. We can advise on which eras sit naturally with your room.

Can retro lights be made to order?

Yes. Alongside genuine originals, we make retro-style pendants, wall lights, sconces and table lamps to order in our Herefordshire workshop, in period-appropriate materials and finishes. If a genuine original you loved has sold, we can often make something very close to it.

Can retro lights take LED bulbs and dimmers?

Yes. All our retro fittings, restored originals included, are rewired for modern bulbs and take LEDs, dimming normally with dimmable LED bulbs on a compatible dimmer. Filament-style LEDs suit retro fittings particularly well, keeping the vintage glow at very low running cost.

How much do retro lights cost?

Genuine restored originals are priced individually by rarity and condition; made-to-order retro fittings are priced comparably with premium retail brands. What you are buying either way is proper materials, four decades of restoration experience, and a fitting that has been made or remade to last.

Can you find or make a specific era of light for me?

Often, yes. Our workshop has restored and made period lighting for over forty years, and one-off originals pass through regularly. Tell us the era and style you are after, mid-century, Art Deco, Edwardian, and we will tell you honestly what we have, what is coming, or what we can make.
