Outdoor Lighting Ideas

Add a touch of elegance to your garden, patio, pathway or driveway. Find out how you can make the most of your garden with our range of outdoor lighting ideas.

Outdoor lighting earns its keep twice over: it makes your home welcoming after dark and keeps paths, steps and doorways safe, and it extends the life of a garden or terrace deep into the evening. The right fittings do it with character; the wrong ones with a cold security-light glare.

Our outdoor lighting is designed and handmade in our Herefordshire workshop, as we have done since 1982, in materials that belong outside: the copper outdoor wall light, which weathers to a beautiful verdigris, galvanised swan neck and galvanised wall lights, and wall lanterns like the Trellech and Tintern. Every fitting is purpose-built and rated for the weather, wired and tested to current standards.

The honest rules: outdoor fittings must be properly rated for where they sit, warm light flatters planting and brickwork where cold light glares, and fewer, better-placed fittings always beat a flood of them. Tell us about your garden, porch or terrace and we will help you plan it.

What outdoor lighting is best for a house exterior?

For a house exterior, warm wall lights flanking the door, a lantern in the porch, and low, shielded light on paths and steps work best, welcoming and safe without glare. Materials matter outside: copper and galvanised steel weather beautifully. Fritz Fryer makes each of these to order, rated for the weather.

What does an IP rating mean for outdoor lights?

An IP rating tells you how well a fitting resists dust and water: the first digit is solids, the second liquids. For outdoor wall lights look for IP44 or higher; for fittings exposed to driven rain or near the ground, higher still. Every outdoor fitting we sell is rated for its intended position, and we will confirm exactly what your spot needs.

Are copper outdoor lights a good choice?

Yes, and they get better with age. Solid copper is naturally weatherproof, and over its first years outdoors it mellows from bright penny to deep bronze to verdigris, a finish no paint can fake. Our copper outdoor wall light is handmade in our Herefordshire workshop and built to weather gracefully for decades.

How do I light a porch?

A porch wants one welcoming fitting: a wall lantern beside the door or a pendant under the porch roof, warm and shielded rather than glaring, plus good light on the step and lock. Both our Trellech and Tintern lanterns are purpose-made and rated for porches, sized to order.

What colour temperature is best for outdoor lighting?

Warm white, around 2700K, almost always. It flatters brickwork, stone and planting, feels welcoming at the door, and avoids the cold glare of security lighting. All our outdoor fittings take LED bulbs, so you get the warmth with a fraction of the running cost of old halogen floods.

Can outdoor lights be dimmed or put on sensors?

Yes to both. Our outdoor fittings take dimmable LED bulbs and work normally with PIR motion sensors and dusk-to-dawn photocells fitted by your electrician, so lights can welcome you home, save energy overnight, and dim for evening atmosphere on the terrace.

How many outdoor lights do I need?

Fewer than you think. A pair flanking the door, light on the path and steps, and one or two fittings where you sit is a complete scheme for most homes. Darkness between pools of warm light is what makes a garden feel magical; floodlighting everything flattens it. Tell us your layout and we will plan it with you.

How much do outdoor lights cost?

Our made-to-order outdoor fittings are priced comparably with premium retail brands. What the extra buys is solid copper and galvanised steel rather than plated imitations that rust, handmaking in Herefordshire, proper weather ratings, and fittings built to weather decades of British seasons.
