Modern Lighting

Modern lighting combines beauty and functionality. Our endless customisation options help you design the perfect lighting for your space.

Modern lighting works hardest of any style. It has to feel current without going cold, and clean without going bland, in homes that range from new builds to period conversions that want a deliberate contemporary contrast.

Our modern collection is designed and handmade in our Herefordshire workshop, as everything we make has been since 1982. The materials are traditional, hand-spun brass and hand-blown glass, but the lines are clean and the forms simple, so the quality of the making does the talking rather than ornament. Because every piece is made to order, finishes, drop lengths and shades can be adjusted to your room, and matching pieces across a scheme is straightforward.

The range spans modern pendant lighting for kitchens and dining spaces, modern chandeliers and cluster lights for high ceilings, modern wall lights for hallways and bedrooms, and our contemporary Lugg and Alton designs. If you are lighting a whole house or a commercial space, tell us the scheme and we will help you pull it together honestly, including where a simpler fitting will do the job for less.

What counts as modern lighting?

Modern lighting is defined by clean lines, simple forms and honest materials rather than decoration. Think uncluttered pendants, geometric clusters and pared-back wall lights. Fritz Fryer’s modern range uses traditional craftsmanship, hand-spun brass and hand-blown glass, in contemporary designs that sit comfortably in new builds and period homes alike.

Does modern lighting work in a period home?

Yes, and often beautifully. A clean contemporary pendant or wall light in a Georgian or Victorian room creates a deliberate contrast that interior designers use constantly. The key is quality: a well-made modern fitting in brass or glass respects the room, while a cheap one fights it.

Can modern light fittings be customised in finish and size?

Yes. Every modern fitting is made to order in our Herefordshire workshop, so we can change finishes, adjust drop lengths and alter dimensions to suit your room. If you need a run of matching fittings for a whole house or commercial project, that is straightforward for us.

Are modern pendant lights suitable for kitchens?

Very much so. A row of modern pendants over a kitchen island or peninsula is one of the most effective uses of contemporary lighting. Hang them around 75 to 90 centimetres above the worktop, and for a standard island two or three pendants usually sit right. We can advise on spacing for your exact layout.

Do your modern lights take LED bulbs and dimmers?

Yes. All our modern fittings take LED bulbs and dim normally with dimmable LEDs on a compatible dimmer. You get the warm light the designs are made for at low running cost, and we can recommend specific bulbs for each fitting.

How do I stop modern lighting feeling cold?

Choose warm materials and warm light. Brass, bronze and hand-blown glass keep a contemporary design feeling warm, and a 2700K LED gives the softness of traditional bulbs. Modern lighting goes cold when the materials are cheap or the light is too white, not because it is modern.

How long do made-to-order modern lights take?

Most pieces take a few weeks, because each is made by hand to your order rather than taken from a shelf. If you have a deadline, a house move or a project handover, tell us when you order and we will confirm a realistic delivery date before you commit.

Can you supply modern lighting for commercial spaces?

Yes. Our modern range is used in offices, restaurants, hotels and retail spaces as well as homes. The fittings are built to cope with commercial use, and we regularly produce matching runs for whole schemes. Contact us with your project for quantities and pricing.
