Reception Lighting ideas

A reception area is often the first opportunity to make an impression. With our customisable reception lighting options you can create a dramatic impact, warm welcome or add a touch of sophistication.

Your reception is the first room anyone sees, and it gets about five seconds to say the right thing about your home or your business. Lighting does more of that work than any piece of furniture in it.

The trick with reception lighting is layering. A statement pendant or chandelier gives the room its focal point, wall lights add warmth at eye level, and a table or floor lamp stops the space feeling flat in the evening. Get the scale right and the room feels generous; get it wrong and even beautiful furniture looks lost. We will always advise honestly on size, because a chandelier that is too small is the most common mistake we see.

Every fitting here is designed and handmade in our Herefordshire workshop, as we have done since 1982, and most can be adjusted in finish, size and drop to fit your space exactly. Browse reception chandeliers, reception pendant lights, reception wall lights and reception floor lamps, including statement pieces like our Alton 2 Tier Chandelier and Long Drop Stairwell Cluster Chandelier. Send us a photo of the space if you would like a second opinion.

What lighting is best for a reception room or entrance hall?

Reception lighting works best in layers: a statement pendant or chandelier as the focal point, wall lights for warmth at eye level, and a lamp for evening softness. For double-height halls, a long-drop cluster chandelier fills the space. Fritz Fryer makes each of these to order, sized for your room.

How big should a chandelier be for a reception room?

As a guide, add the room’s length and width in feet, and that number in inches gives a sensible chandelier diameter. For entrance halls and stairwells, err larger: an undersized chandelier is the most common mistake and the hardest to unsee. Send us your room dimensions and we will recommend a size.

Can reception lighting be made to match my decor?

Yes. Every fitting is made to order in our Herefordshire workshop, so finishes, shades, drop lengths and sizes can be adjusted to your scheme. If you are working from a moodboard or photos, send them over and we will suggest fittings and finishes that sit naturally with your decor.

What height should I hang a pendant in a hallway or reception?

In a hallway, keep at least 2.1 metres of clearance underneath for walk-through spaces. Over a console or table, 75 to 90 centimetres above the surface works well. In a stairwell, the fitting can drop much lower because nobody walks beneath it, which is where long-drop designs earn their keep.

Do your reception lights work on standard UK wiring?

Yes. Every fitting is wired and tested in our workshop to current UK standards before it leaves, and installs like any quality light fitting. All work with LED bulbs, and most dim beautifully with dimmable LEDs on a compatible dimmer.

Can you make matching lights for a whole reception space?

Yes, and this is where made-to-order really helps. We can produce a chandelier with matching wall lights, pendants and lamps in the same design and finish, so the whole reception hangs together. For commercial receptions and hotels, we produce consistent runs across large schemes.

How much does good reception lighting cost?

Our made-to-order fittings start at prices comparable with premium retail brands, with statement chandeliers rising with size and specification. What you get for the difference is handmade quality, a fitting sized and finished for your room, and something that will outlast trends rather than date with them.

How long does a made-to-order reception light take?

Most pieces take a few weeks, made by hand to your order. If you are working to a deadline, tell us when you order and we will give you a realistic date before you commit. For larger projects we agree a schedule with you at the outset.
