Globe Lighting

Globe lighting is an easy way to add a stylish contemporary look in both commercial or residential spaces. The pretty, spherical shape of our globe fittings are a great finishing touch to contemporary interiors.

There is a reason the globe never goes out of style: it is the purest shape in lighting, a perfect sphere of soft, even light that flatters everything beneath it. Victorian lamplight, 1930s opaline, mid-century glass, the globe has carried every era, and it sits happily in any of them.

Our globe lighting is designed and handmade in our Herefordshire workshop, as we have done since 1982, in proper hand-blown and opal glass with solid brass fittings: globe pendant lights for kitchens and tables, globe lanterns like the Grafton for halls, and globe clusters, from our Hereford Globe Multi Pendant in five to nine lights to the Cascade Cluster, for stairwells and voids. Globe wall lights and globe table lamps carry the shape through a scheme.

Every fitting is made to order, so sizes, drops and finishes are set to your room. Tell us where the globe is going and we will help you choose honestly, from a single pendant to a nineteen-light cascade.

What is globe lighting?

Globe lighting is lighting built around a spherical glass shade, giving soft, even, glare-free light in a shape that has suited every era from Victorian gas lamps to mid-century modern. Fritz Fryer makes globe pendants, lanterns, clusters, wall lights and lamps by hand in Herefordshire.

Where do globe lights work best?

Globes work almost anywhere: pendants over kitchen islands and tables, lanterns in halls and stairwells, clusters in voids, wall lights flanking mirrors and fireplaces. Their soft, even light is especially kind in bathrooms and bedrooms. The shape’s simplicity is what makes it so adaptable.

What size globe light do I need?

Match the globe to its setting: a single pendant should be around a third of the width of the table or island beneath it; in open space, add the room’s length and width in feet for a diameter in inches. Over islands, several smaller globes usually beat one large one. Tell us your dimensions and we will advise.

Are your globe lights real glass?

Yes, proper glass throughout, opal, clear and hand-blown depending on the design, with solid brass fittings. Plastic globe imitations scratch, yellow and cheapen with time; real glass keeps its clarity and weight for decades. That is the difference made-to-order materials make.

Can globe lights be dimmed?

Yes. All our globe fittings take LED bulbs and dim normally with dimmable LEDs on a compatible dimmer, and a dimmed opal globe is one of the softest lights a room can have. We can recommend bulb and dimmer pairings for each fitting.

What is a globe cluster light?

A globe cluster gathers several glass globes at different heights from a single ceiling point, turning one fitting into a centrepiece. Our clusters run from three to nineteen globes, sized to your space, from dining table arrangements to long-drop cascades for stairwell voids, all made to order.

Do globe lights suit period homes?

Yes, perhaps better than any other shape. Globes have been made continuously since the Victorian era, so they sit naturally in Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and 1930s houses alike, and equally in contemporary rooms. Choose opal glass and aged brass for period warmth, clear glass for a cleaner look.

How much do globe lights cost?

Single made-to-order globe pendants are priced comparably with premium retail brands; clusters rise with globe count and drop. What you are buying is real glass and solid brass, handmaking in Herefordshire, sizes and drops set to your room, and a fitting built to last decades.
