Do I need a Pattress for my Light and how do I use It?

In this guide you will find everything you need to know about pattresses and why they’re a small but mighty part of your lighting setup.

YOUR GUIDE ON USING A PATTRESS WITH YOUR LIGHTING

A common question we hear from customers is: “Do I really need a pattress and what exactly do I do with it?”

WHAT IS A PATTRESS, AND WHAT IS IT USED FOR?

A pattress is a round or square wooden mounting block that sits between your light fitting and the surface, whether that’s a ceiling or a wall.

It’s used to:

  • Cover untidy or oversized cable holes
  • Create a flat, secure surface for mounting the fitting
  • Suspend more decorative light fittings
  • Provide a neat, finished look

Pattresses are especially popular in older buildings, where ceilings or walls aren’t always smooth or straightforward. Think of a pattress like a subtle frame, not essential for every project, but when it’s needed, it makes all the difference, they are particularly useful if you need to use very long screws to install your light fittings onto a wall or ceiling.  In this instance you can use a long screws to attach the pattress to the ceiling and then the smaller, decorative screws can be used to attach the light fitting to it.

DO I ALWAYS NEED ONE?

Not always.

If your light fitting has a wide enough ceiling plate or backplate to neatly cover the wiring point, and the surface is flat and solid, you might not need a pattress at all.

But if:

  • The hole in your ceiling or wall is too big
  • The surface is uneven
  • The fitting doesn’t sit flush
  • You’re fixing into tricky materials

…then a pattress can help create a cleaner, more secure finish.

CAN I USE A PATTRESS ON A WALL LIGHT TOO?

Absolutely.

Pattresses aren’t just for ceiling lights, they’re also incredibly useful for wall fittings, especially in homes with older or uneven walls.

If you’re installing a wall light where the cable entry is rough, off-centre, or too large for the fitting’s backplate, a pattress provides a neat, level base. It makes the fitting easier to install, helps hide imperfections, and can even add a subtle decorative detail.

Just like with ceiling lights, you can paint the pattress to match your wall, or leave it natural to add a bit of contrast and character.

HOW DO I INSTALL A PATTRESS?

Whether you’re a confident DIYer or passing it to your electrician, installation is straightforward:

  1. Mark the position of the Pattress so that the cable lines up with the central hole.
  2. Fix the Pattress securely to the surface using suitable fixings, such as wall plugs for brick or plasterboard screws for stud walls or ceilings.
  3. Thread the lighting cable through the hole.
  4. Mount the light fitting onto the pattress, using the pattress itself as the fixing point.
  5. Wire and secure the light as usual, following the manufacturer’s instructions or with help from a qualified electrician.

That’s it – simple, secure, and a better-looking result.

Please note: Working with electrics can be dangerous. If you have any doubts about installing your Pattress or connecting your light fitting, we strongly recommend speaking to a qualified electrician or builder. Safety always comes first.
