Lantern Skylight Lighting

Lighting a roof lantern or skylight void can be tricky, but we’re here to help. From stairwells to open-plan kitchens, getting it right comes down to scale, proportion, and practicality. We’ll guide you every step of the way.

A roof lantern or skylight floods a room with daylight, then leaves it oddly dark the moment the sun goes: a black hole overhead exactly where the room’s focal point should be. The answer is a light made for the space, hung in or beneath the opening so the lantern works around the clock.

We design and make lantern skylight lighting in our Herefordshire workshop, as we have done since 1982: globe lanterns like our Grafton and Hereford Globe Hall Lantern, the Ledbury lantern, and clusters like the Hereford Globe Multi Pendant and Cascade Cluster for larger openings. Because every fitting is made to order, the drop and size are set to your opening exactly.

The two things to get right are scale and fixing: the fitting must fill the opening without crowding it, and hang safely from the structure around it. Send us the dimensions of your roof lantern or skylight, and photographs if you have them, and we will recommend honestly what will work.

What light should I hang in a roof lantern?

A roof lantern suits a pendant, globe lantern or cluster hung centrally in or beneath the opening, sized to fill the space without crowding it. Round globe lanterns and clusters flatter the geometry of most lanterns. Fritz Fryer makes each to order, sized and dropped to your exact opening.

How big should a light be for a roof lantern?

As a guide, the fitting should be around a third to half the width of the lantern opening, generous enough to hold the space, not so large it blocks the daylight it is celebrating. Send us your lantern’s dimensions and a photograph and we will recommend a size before we make it.

How do you hang a light from a roof lantern?

Most roof lanterns cannot take weight on the glazing bars themselves, so the fitting usually hangs from the structure above or the surrounding ceiling, with the cable run discreetly. Your electrician will confirm the fixing point; we will make the fitting to the exact drop once it is known.

Can a pendant hang below a skylight?

Yes, hung from the surrounding ceiling structure into the void the skylight creates, a pendant or cluster turns a daytime feature into an evening one. The drop is set so the fitting sits within the opening’s sightlines. Made-to-order means we set that drop exactly, once your measurements are known.

What style of light suits a roof lantern?

Roof lanterns sit over kitchens, extensions and orangeries, and suit fittings with some transparency or lightness: globe lanterns, glass clusters, open pendants that do not block the daylight. Heavy solid shades fight the point of the opening. We will advise honestly on what your space can carry.

Can skylight lights be dimmed?

Yes. All our fittings take LED bulbs and dim normally with dimmable LEDs on a compatible dimmer, so the lantern can glow gently in the evening and run bright when the room is working. We can recommend bulb and dimmer pairings for each fitting.

How do you clean or change bulbs in a lantern light?

Plan for it at the start: we recommend long-life LED bulbs so changes are years apart, and we will advise on a drop that keeps the fitting reachable with the access your room allows. Glass globes and lanterns lift or unscrew for cleaning; we will talk through the practicalities before you commit.

How much does lantern skylight lighting cost?

Single globe lanterns and pendants are priced comparably with premium retail brands; larger clusters rise with light count and drop. What you are buying is a fitting made exactly to your opening’s measurements, handmade in Herefordshire from solid brass and real glass, built to last decades.
