Initially, many homeowners converted old chandeliers to electric fittings. But over time, new lighting designs emerged, created specifically to suit electric wiring and bulbs. These were the first true electroliers.
The trend really took off after the First World War, when more households had electricity. This is why most antique electroliers today date from the 1920s onwards.
